STARLIE GEIKIE

Hovering somewhere between drawing, painting, textile design, installation and craft, Starlie Geikie’s works resist easy classification. Since completing a Masters in Fine Arts from RMIT University in 2002, Geikie has developed a unique visual language that mines a rich archive of material and historical references from feminist literary fiction to modernist interior design, from Shaker furniture to the collages of Hannah Hoch.
Combining formalist concerns with an atmosphere redolent of the 1970s, Geikie’s most recent works combine references to the Bauhaus weavings of Gunta Stolz and Anni Albers, the colour field paintings of Morris Louis as well as Amish quilts. For the work in this exhibition Geikie uses Xerox copies of a Sonia Delaunay textile design as the basis for a series of geometric collages incorporating hand dyed fabrics.
