DRAWING WITH LIGHT: SOLAR OPTICS
JULIA FRANCIS

In the Drawing with light projects, rather than using the camera to clarify or consolidate realities, the camera is used as an eye and arm that reaches into the world of unperceivable spaces and unfolded pockets of light.
By activating these spaces reality becomes extended. Visual language extends the boundaries of thought, especially through abstraction, taking the mind to mysterious places.
This series of images are made with sunlight, L.E.D. light and photography. The process involves tracing movements in space with light.
Etienne-Jules Marey’s practice of tracing energy in space, as a way of making “grace take form” is an idea I’m drawn to. Like Marey I’m following this idea of tracing movements and rhythms to create sculptural forms in my images.
