THE RIDICULOUS CAVALCADE
ABIGAIL HART
The Ridiculous Cavalcade uses text and painted image to describe the actions of a narrator, a bull and a series of actors. It explores the experience of psychological struggle; specifically the experiences of pain, complicity in destructive behaviour, and the restless search for peace.
The underlying drive of this exploration is an attempt to identify the capacity for compassion within the painted image. With this aim in mind, both technical means (consideration of palate, of mark making, interaction of text and image, a narrative) and conceptual means (a metaphorical animal capable of destruction and suffering that is randomly subsumed by narrator and actors) have been engaged – searching for a painting that acknowledges struggle and respite.
