WANDERINGS III
LEITH MAGUIRE
The act of traversing an expansive natural tract of land has long fulfilled a variety of purposes. It has been a fundamental means of documenting and understanding the forces and cycles inherent in a given environment. Immersion in the wilderness has also become a rite of passage through which we hope to discover or unravel the secret of some perceived higher meaning to human existence – to ‘truly’ understand ourselves and our place in the dynamic natural system of which we are all a part. For me, the excitement of creating lies in the searching rather than the finding; the process of making rather than the notion of a predetermined outcome. The work in this exhibition is based on sketches made during wanderings through the north-eastern desert region of South Australia.
