SPACE A
IN PRAISE OF SHADOWS
NICOLA PAGE

The exhibition takes lead from the 1979 essay of the same title by Junichiro Tanizaki on the place of darkness and shadow in the traditional aesthetics of Japan as he places great value on these elements in shaping his experience of space and culture.
‘In Praise of Shadows’ muses upon the possibility that introspective pleasures of a Japanese tea house may be found in the landscape of urban in-between spaces, seeking stillness in the of passing time, the rhythm of a landscape devouring itself when left to its own devices and moments we are consumed by the psycho-emotive experiences of our surroundings and the objects we place there. The works reflect Tanizaki’s appreciation for the deepening experience of beauty through shadow and darkness.
