CAROLINE ASKEW

To rescue, re-cycle, recreate, respect and re-appreciate.
This installation is a celebration of women’s work. Through familiar items a “textile” painting is created to highlight both the art of the homemaker and the sanctity of ordinary things.
My work references memory and nostalgia through questioning and re-evaluating the place of handcrafts in a mass produced consumer society. Hand-made items are re-ascribed in a manner that evokes a shared memory and documents past traditions.

By re-working domestic objects I honour equally the labours and memory of unknown women in their creative efforts to provide comfort and beauty to their surroundings.
