VIOLETTA DEL CONTE RACE
A woman walks through the city. She may be distracted by old posters peeling off a boarded up building or by a glamorous window display. She might be in a hurry and notice nothing but what is racing through her mind.
This set of images portrays experiences of city streets. I wanted to translate these real or imagined encounters into something closer to the feeling of a place – a state of mind – rather than a literal depiction of it.
I used an intuitive and spontaneous method of picture making, beginning figuratively. Through experimentation with the mediums of pastel, acrylic paint, spray paint and collage, the works became more abstracted.
The abstract and figurative works sit alongside one another to create a whole description of many things happening at once; much like a busy street with many things reflecting at you simultaneously.
