SHANNON SMILEY + HELEN NODDING
In examining the notion of the Re-Enchanted City, Shannon Smiley and Helen Nodding bring together a collection of recent artworks. The exhibition reflects the artists’ shared interest in the imaginative and subjective possibilities of representing the urban landscape. Whilst Smiley concentrates upon the compositional aspects of what makes something romantic or picturesque as a constructed ideal; Nodding focuses upon the decorative features of the city’s material, textural and physical qualities. Revealing in common a passion for the ‘overlooked’, individual works explore the aesthetic qualities of the urban ruin. Here, discarded debris and incidental nature become a means to generate poetic expression as the familiar becomes extraordinary and the everyday, profound.
