VARIATIONS
REBECCA MONAGHAN
Variations is an installation of large soft sculptures. Each is a unique form but all the elements are made from the same mathematical pattern. The abstract and tactile work takes ideas from comparative anatomy and evolutionary studies that show our complex biological structures are created by simple common units shared amongst species. We all know that we share 98% of our DNA with chimpanzees, but we also share 85% of our DNA with zebra fish. Understanding ourselves as a small twig on an evolution tree for some can be captivating, for others, liberating.
