TROPICALSPASMO: LETTERS FROM THE ORIENT
OLIVIA HITTMANN
The work presented in this show is the result of a 2-month artist in residency program undertaken by Hobart-based printmaker Olivia Hittmann in Beijing.
This period in China has evidently bolstered Hittmann’s unremitting desire to parody ‘out-dated’ ideas such Post-Colonialism and Orientalism.
Tropicalspasmo aspires to avenge the absence of a utopia in this world and in doing so it manifests an unabashed artificiality that is gripped by the fatalistic cravings of a punch-drunk, quixotic fool – as well as an obsession with printed paraphernalia.
The imagery presented here was collected during the residency period in Beijing and has been collaged and screen printed in Hittmann’s studio in Hobart.
She reports that the Pineapple Sandwich Cookie, like so many other things, looks a lot better than it tastes.
