PRECIOUS LITTLE
KRISTEN PHILLIPS
Taking inspiration from the funeral art and reliquaries studied in a recent sabbatical to Italy, Phillips has transformed her own family heirlooms and those of her friends into memento mori. The artist collages vanitas objects; skeletons, candles, detritus and timepieces, with personal mementos; travel souvenirs, jewelry, tools, buttons and thimbles.
This work is concerned with the journey of objects from ordinary to precious, when they become the relics of our dearly departed. By recasting these objects into mysterious reliquary or shrines they provide a commentary about life (and death) and intergenerational bonds.
The works are displayed within day-glo pink shadow boxes and what-nots, emphasising the tactility of the waxy bronzes, tempting you to touch and serving as a reminder of playful recklessness and the need for us to all have a good time.
