PROPOSITION FOR VILLETTE
JESSICA HOOD
Proposition for Villette responds to the artist witnessing a coincidental passing of a barge transporting stones in the canal of Parc de la Villette in Paris. This event proposed the realisation of garden never constructed on the site. Peter Eisenman and Jacques Derrida designed this unrealised garden titled Choral Work, between 1985 and 1987, upon invitation of the park’s designer Bernard Tschumi. The prescription given to them was that only water and stone should be used, and no vegetation. The garden itself was never realised, the only evidence of it is contained within a book titled Chora L Works, published as a document of the collaboration. The work converses between that potential garden concept and the documentation of the passing barge of stones that recalled it.
