Boundary Event
Jemila MacEwan
Boundary Event comprises two new performance-based video works by Jemila MacEwan – Casa and This Place – filmed on location in Mexico in 2015 as part of the Arquetopia Residency Program. MacEwan’s work is characterised by the reconfiguration of the body and familiar objects into uncanny beings that negate the world around them. Their bodies are simultaneously of this world and a window into alternative realities where accepted hierarchies are rearranged. These new works examine the function of existing cultural heritage and tradition from the transient position of a visiting artist. In Boundary Event, MacEwan performs the role of nucleus, residing within costume and landscape, drawing on vulnerability and reciprocity as resources for cultural production.
