DON’T FORGET ME
CARLY FISCHER
Don’t Forget Me is a sculptural and sound installation that reflects on how Australian mythologies and film representations of being lost in the landscape might resonate with contemporary realities. In the installation, samples from Australian film are remixed with the forgotten fragments that litter these landscapes in a current context. Presented as a theatrical paper model proposition, the installation shifts ambiguously between the sites of the Abbotsford Convent, Picnic at Hanging Rock and the Central Australian Desert. Crushed and ripped beer cans, dirty plastic bags, a trashed road sign, security fencing, scattered red rocks and broken glass are emptied of their histories, resurfaced and re-presented as reminders of the deserted realities behind familiar representations. From amongst the desert detritus, a Coles bag pleads “Don’t Forget Me”, echoing the haunting Picnic at Hanging Rock soundtrack and reflecting on its equally sinister contemporary context.
