Vera Pelle
Brigit Ryan
Drawing from the built environment, Vera Pelle plays with the distinction between architectural surfaces and the volumes they encase. This exhibition meditates on materials through transparency, light, solidity and softness. The flat plane traditionally provides a place for abstraction beyond the artwork’s materiality. Representation sits on the surface of things, while objects themselves can be experienced in their tactile immediacy. Bouncing between these artistic conventions – the implied honesty of the material against the cultural content it may project beyond its physicality – is central to Brigit Ryan’s practice. The work blurs the lines between flatness and object-ness, materiality and cultural content, and modes of viewing of artwork.
