THE ASSASSINATION OF ANASTASIO SOMOZA

An exacting, 1:1 scale replica of the Mercedes-Benz sedan in which Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza was assassinated in 1980 sits in the gallery space.
Here the wreckage remains, but Somoza’s body is gone. Is this the very same car pictured in the photograph, 30 years on? Or is this a simulation- a copy of that car? Either way this is a retrieval of something from the historical past; it is a kind of husk, or material leftover from a moment of committed political action.
