Piers Greville
Piers Greville draws on traditional modes of painting as a frame of reference to explore liminal psychological states. These recent paintings represent an album of mental snapshots committed to paint in a consistently small format. A process of working that arrests moments from trains of thought and distills them into ‘mental artefacts’. Many of them are framed by a void of relative darkness, both pictorially and figuratively. This focus reflects the meditation on that singular phrase without external link, each painting can be viewed as a looking back at the final fragment of a cut-off dream, or the slice of a stream of consciousness laid out. They are personal pictures that arise from the inquiry of a certain psychological space. Resisting a readily traceable thread between the images, they weave a path along the edge of subconscious and possible deliberate narratives, collapsed into a formally cohesive set.
