The American South West has always been the Great Frontier. The birthplace of an age that has boomed and collapsed in even cycles. It is a broad stretch of desert, made accessible by the proliferation of the motorcar, and inhabitable by man’s drive to claim what nature denies him. The artists were captivated by its stark representation of the excesses, and inevitable decay, of modern life. Warwick Baker’s photographs portray the faded and falling scenery that stretches from deep in the California and Arizona deserts, to the imperfect sprawl of Los Angeles.
