THE LIKES OF YOU
NIK PAPAS
This body of work looks to the figure of the epistolary exchange.
The context of the correspondence is established by interpreting and refiguring Brancusi’s The Gate of the Kiss in the here and now. The overall framework of this work points to the meaning of ‘translation’, its function in social discourse, and to the parameters by which the transmission of the thought of the sender as he or she has transcribed it on a material support becomes an open letter, or postcard (as Derrida would say).
Likewise, the edition of postage stamps are prompted by a novel reflection on the past, and of the various methods or procedures by which it speaks, fails to speak, or is prohibited from speaking to us.
